A dental extraction only takes one visit, and it is performed under local anaesthetic (unless there are several extractions to be completed at the same time in which case a general anaesthetic may be preferred).
Extraction of a tooth will result in the surrounding teeth collapsing into the space created by the extraction. The teeth either side tend to fall into the space, while the opposing tooth that used to bite onto the tooth before it was removed will progressively get pushed out of the jaw into the space.
Prosthetic replacements will often be discussed before a dental extraction to avoid these complications.
