Over time, if enough of the jaw bone dissolves away, the tooth can become loose or even fall out of the mouth. This is often known as gum or periodontal disease.
Gum treatment is aimed at removing the build-up, stopping the damage to the gums and jaw bone and re-establish a healthy relationship with the tooth. Gum treatment also needs to be combined with good home care, which can involve not only brushing, but also flossing and using special brushes aimed at cleaning between the teeth and gums.
Gum treatment is completed over several sessions spanning over half a year (in more straightforward cases) and up to two years or more in more (in severe cases). Each session is spaced 3-6 months apart, depending on the severity of the gum disease. After the gums are returned to a healthy state, regular cleaning and maintenance can help them stay healthy and prevent the gum disease from returning.
